Greek National Opera to Perform Mozart’s Requiem in Athens

14/04/2011

W.A. Mozart, Requiem: Greek National Opera, Olympia Theater, Akademias Str. 59-61, Athens, 16.4.2011 at 20:00,  Conductor – Ilias Voudouris, Chorus Master – Nikos Vassiliou (BM)

In the midst of the current economic crisis in Greece, GNO is struggling to pay its own staff and artists, making this initiative to devote a special concert to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan a particularly commendable initiative.

The soloists are among the best singers Greece has to offer at present: Vassiliki Karayanni (soprano), Victoria Dina-Maifatova (mezzo), Antonis Koroneos (tenor) and Dimitris Kassioumis (bass).

The concert, aptly scheduled for the last Saturday prior to the beginning of Holy Week, is not to be missed, and will be preceded by a lecture (in Greek) on Thursday, 14.4.2011, at 17:00, in the foyer of the Olympia Theater, given by conductor Ilias Voudouris and Nikos Xanthopoulos, head of GNO Educational Program, who will be discussing the history of Mozart’s Requiem, which has been linked to stories of intrigues and myths with respect to the early death of the composer.

Those interested in this aspect of Mozart’s biography may also want to see Peter Shaffer’s play “Amadeus” (also in Greek), which has just opened at the Athens Bretania Theater to great acclaim.

Visit www.nationalopera.gr or call 210 3662100 / 210 3612461 / 210 3643725 for information and tickets for the Requiem

Bretania Theater is located at 7, Panepistimiou Str. – box office tel. 210 3221579.
