Opernwelt Elects Komische Oper Berlin “Opera House of the Year”

Fifty journalists from all over the world voted the Komische Oper Berlin with its Intendant Barrie KoskyOpera House of the Year”.

From Baroque opera to Bernstein, from children’s opera to operetta, from “Zauberflöte” to Zimmermann, the Komische Oper Berlin continues its award-winning programme and is performing in the current season an ample variety of all the different forms of musical theatre. Says Barrie Kosky: »Sense and sensuality, tradition and innovation as well as music and theatre aren’t opposing poles but complementary elements of an exciting musical theatre.«

Commenting on the Award Berlin’s Mayor Klaus Wowereit said: “This is a wonderful success for the Komische Oper and at the same time a big compliment to its new Intendant. The season’s programme and the attractiveness of the performances are apparently convincing not only a specialized audience but also many, many opera lovers. The rise in box office figures is significant. The award is a well deserved tribute to excellent work.”

State Secretary of Culture André Schmitz added: “In 2007 the Komische Oper and Berlin were proud and happy to gain this award and it was mentioned then that the Komische Oper Berlin has changed into a hip address for a new fresh audience. This applied then and still does now. The courage to present polemical productions, excellent work with both chorus and orchestra, a perceptible team spirit in the house, an effective children’s and youth work programme and modern marketing have paid off. The house’s reputation resounds throughout the land and beyond. The Komische Oper Berlin should be pleased that a large audience is delighted with what they do. Congratulations!”
