20 years old this year and one of the hottest string ensembles around, the Henschel Quartet is currently celebrating its anniversary in style with a packed diary of exciting engagements. Major tours of Europe, the USA and Japan include two complete Beethoven quartet cycles and a series of masterclasses in Tokyo and California. ‘We want to express something lively and important, something that is very dear to us,’ explains cellist Mathias Beyer-Karlshøj. ‘The Quartet is like a marriage of four.’

The Henschel’s devoted support of modern music will see them performing Hans Werner Henze at Munich’s Biennale Festival and the groundbreaking scores of Chris Theofanadis at Washington’s National Gallery. Their recent collaboration with composer-pianist Steffen Wick on a dazzling new ‘live’ soundtrack to the classic 1903 French silent film Le Royaume des Fées (‘the Kingdom of the Fairies’) is now available on YouTube:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfmH7WyWXg8

Between July and November the Henschel will be making no fewer than six appearances in the UK, climaxing in a concert on November 11th at St John’s Smith Square, London, featuring favourite quartets by Beethoven and Dvořák alongside Brahms’s mighty Piano Quintet with celebrated virtuoso Martino Tirimo.

As official Ambassadors to SOS Children’s Villages, the Henschel has a passionate commitment to encouraging young talent‘Our trust The Friends of the Henschel Quartet,’ explains violist Monika Henschel, ‘not only supports chamber music in the community, but also gives talented young ensembles the time and support they need to flourish away from commercial pressures.’

‘The quartet has achieved a perfect balance of striving forward yet at the same time taking a breath when it’s needed,‘ reflects 1st violinist Christoph Henschel. ‘We are full of power and energy and are bursting with new ideas and plans for the future. But we only do what we love to do.‘

“I have only been involved in the last 3 of the quartet’s 20 years, but it’s been a privilege and a pleasure to join such a well-functioning group, that has developed such warm relationships with fans, concert promoters and agents over two decades.  Here’s to the next 20 years!” says Daniel Bell (2nd violin).
