Opera premières next season in Zurich include: Der Freischütz (Weber) (18 September 2016) – with young Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen as Agathe, Christopher Ventris as Max and Christoph Fischesser as Kaspar. Marc Albrecht conducts, Herbert Fritsch produces.

Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Mozart) (6 November 2016) – Teodor Currentzis and Christoph Altstaedt in the pit, David Herrman production. Olga Peretyatko as Konstanze and Pavol Breslik as Belmonte

dée (Charpentier) (22 Jan 2017) – William Christie conducts an Andreas Homoki production. Stéphanie d’Oustrac as Médée.

Werther (Massenet) (2 April 2017) – Cornelius Meister in the pit, Tatjana Gürbaca produces. Juan Diego Flórez as Werther, Anna Stéphany as Charlotte.

The Fiery Angel (Prokofiev) (7 May 2017) – Gianandrea Nosea conducts a Calixto Bieito production. Ausrine Stundyte and Leigh Melrose in the principal parts.

The Land of Smiles (Lehar) (18 June 2017) Fabio Luisi conducts, Andreas Homoki produces. Piotr Beczala as Prince Sou-Chong and Julia Kleiter as Lisa.

The Impresario (Mozart), Faust (Gounod) with Auguin/Fabiano/Hartig/Ketelsen, Cav and Pag (Mascagni and Leoncavallo) with Naglestad/Alagna/Kurzak, Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart) Antonini/Drole/Fuchs, I Capuleti e I Montecchi (Bellini) Benini/ Kulchynska/ Stéphany, Don Carlos (Verdi) Vargas/Pape/Harteros/Mattei, I Puritani (Bellini) Mazzola/Camarena, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Shostakovich) Vassily Petrenko /Barkmin, Alcina (Handel) Antonini/Bartoli/Jaroussky, Lucia di Lammermoor (Donizetti) Santi/Gimadieva, Otello (Verdi) Armiliato/Antonenko/Agresta, Don Giovanni (Mozart) Minasi/Molnar, L’Elisir d’Amore (Donizetti) Santi/Kulchynska/Breslik, La bohème (Puccini) Bisanti/Bernheim/Buratto, Macbeth (Verdi) Noseda/Serjan/Markov, Orlando Paladino (Haydn) Capuano/Archibald, Un Ballo in Maschera (Verdi) Luisi/ Alvarez/Radvanovsky, Lohengrin (Wagner) Luisi/Jovanovich/Gantner/Martens/ Fischesser, and the Barber of Seville (Rossini) Mazzola/Camarena.

Verdi’s Requiem (3 December 2016) will be given in a ballet version, conducted by Fabio Luisi. Soloists are Stoyanova, Simeoni, Meli and Zeppenfeld.

Ballet premières will include Petrushka and Sacre (Stravinsky) (8 October 2016) and a revival highlight will be Swan Lake (Tchaikovsky) (18 March 2017)

Symphonic concerts:

The opera’s orchestra, The Philharmonia Zurich, will perform symphonic repertoire on the opera house stage in a number of concerts. Nello Santi marks his 85th birthday (23 October 2016) having first conducted at the Zurich Opera in 1958, opera snippets from Rossini, Verdi, Wagner and Puccini in the first half, then Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony.

Zemlinsky’s The Mermaid is on the programme on 19 February 2017 (Robert Trevino conducts). Fabio Luisi picks up the baton on 14 May 2017 and accompanies Anne-Sophie Mutter playing Takemitsu’s Nostalgia – in memory of Andrei Tarkovsky and Bruch’s violin concerto in the first half, then Brahms Fourth Symphony. Luisi then takes this programme and orchestra on an extensive tour (12 to 23 May 2017) to Stuttgart, Munich, Linz, Dresden, Essen, Cologne, Luxemburg and Frankfurt.

On 15 July Luisi will conduct a programme including Strauss Don Juan and Ein Heldenleben.

Lieder Recitals will be performed by Javier Camarena, Leo Nucci, Anne Sofie van Otter, Pavol Breslik, Klaus Florian Vogt, Simon Keenlyside, Karita Mattila and Anja Harteros.

Matti Salminen bids his farewell at the Zurich Opera on 12 November 2016 with arias from The Magic Flute, Eugene Onegin, Don Carlos, The Flying Dutchman, Götterdämmerung and Boris Godunov.
