The Hallé’s 2018/19 season in Manchester

The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder today announce their 161st season. Throughout the year, the orchestra and Sir Mark Elder will celebrate Berlioz’s life and music with performances of The Damnation of Faust (10 February) premiered in Manchester by the Hallé in 1880, Symphonie fantastique, as well as two of his colourful and original overtures, Les Francs Juges (4 April) and Benvenuto Cellini (24 January).

Mark Elder’s programmes during the season also include Strauss’s Don Quixote, performed alongside Elgar’s Symphony No.2 (25 October) and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring paired with Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (29 November). The classical season is brought to an close with a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.2 ‘The Resurrection’ with the Hallé Choir and Anne Schwanewilms and Alice Coote (23 May).

The orchestra’s Thursday Series will open with Edward Gardner (the Hallé’s first Assistant Conductor) on 11 October conducting Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustraand Janácek’s Glagolitic Mass. Current Associate Conductor Jonathon Heyward and his predecessor Jamie Phillips also take to the podium this season. On 25 February Phillips will conduct the world premiere of John Casken’s Madonna of Silence, a trombone concerto which will be performed by the Hallé Principal Trombone Katy Jones.

Other visiting conductors include Karl-Heinz Steffens who opens the 2018/19 season on 20 September, Kazushi Ono (15 November), Cristian Mâcelaru (5,6 & 9 December) and Gergely Madaras (8 June). Soloists performing with the orchestra include Paul Lewis (15 November), Stephen Hough (24 January), the newly crowned winner of the 2018 Leeds International Piano Comeptition (13, 14 & 17 March), Pavel Kolesnikov (21 March), Viktoria Mullova (4 April) and  Francesco Piemontesi (7,8 & 11 November).
