Longborough Festival Opera’s exciting 2021 update

News about Longborough Opera in 2021

Polly Graham and her team are determined to programme an unforgettable 2021 season, so there are a few changes to the previously announced plan of which I wanted to make you aware.

In short, the changes are:
– A new venue, allowing for a larger audience under social distancing
– A concert production of Die Walküre, allowing for a full socially distanced Wagnerian orchestra
– Changes to Longborough’s Ring Cycle schedule
– New 2021 dates added

A new venue: The Big TopThree of Longborough’s 2021 productions – Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses, and Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen – will now take place in a new venue: the Big Top (artist’s impression click here). The Big Top gives Longborough seating flexibility, allowing for a larger (but still socially distanced) audience than the theatre can offer.

Extra dates added & concert production of Die Walküre Die Walküre will take place in Longborough’s beloved theatre. To welcome the largest audience possible, Longborough will programme additional dates, meaning a total of seven performances (see full list below). Longborough will ensure its trademark Wagnerian sound by expanding the orchestra beyond the pit and onto the stage. This will therefore be a concert production, to allow space on stage for both orchestra and cast.

New Schedule: The Ring CycleA concert production of Die Walküre does mean Longborough will need additional time to prepare for the full Ring cycle, originally planned for 2023. Siegfried and Götterdämmerung will now be seen in order, fully staged, with the full cycle to be performed in 2024. The new schedule is as follows:

2021: Die Walküre (concert production)
2022: Siegfried
2023: Götterdämmerung
2024: Der Ring des Nibelungen

Anthony Negus, Longborough’s Music Director, comments: ‘By setting the Ring back to 2024 we can now give Siegfried the proper attention it deserves in 2022. When rehearsing the full Ring, we will be better prepared to fully stage Die Walküre for the first time, having paved the way in 2021.’

2021 Performance Dates

As a result of all these changes, the 2021 performance dates are now as follows:

Die Walküre: 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 14 June 2021
Così fan tutte: 23, 26, 27, 29 June, 1, 3, 4 July 2021
The Return of Ulysses: 13, 15, 17, 18 July 2021
The Cunning Little Vixen: 29, 31 July, 1, 3 August 2021
