The Gewandhausorchester’s concert under the baton of Riccardo Chailly on 6th June 2014 at 8 p.m. CET in the Leipzig Gewandhaus, generously supported by DHL, will be broadcast live online on www.gewandhaus.dewww.dhl.com/concert and  – for the first time – on www.facebook.com/gewandhaus.

As part of the Gewandhaus’s Richard Strauss Cycle the Orchestra will perform three of the revered composer’s greatest masterpieces:

Don Quixote – Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character, op. 35
Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration) – Tone Poem for Large Orchestra, op. 24
Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche (Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks) – op. 28

The concert on 6th June 2014 is one of nine comprising the Gewandhaus’s major cycle celebrating the 150th birthday of Richard Strauss. The cycle embraces the great master’s symphonic, chamber and organ music.

Richard Strauss conducted the Gewandhausorchester on four occasions (1887, 1907, 1926 and 1934).

His orchestral suite “Schlagobers”, op. 70, received its world premiere by the Gewandhausorchester under the baton of Bruno Walter in the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 20th October 1932.

The Gewandhaus staged its first Richard Strauss cycle as early as the 1920/21 season under the direction of Arthur Nikisch. This was followed by the Richard Strauss Festival in 1926, in which the composer himself conducted the Gewandhausorchester.

The Orchestra’s last Strauss cycle took place 25 years ago in the 1988/89 season. The cycle was completed in the historically significant autumn of 1989 with a Strauss symposium and a concert under the baton of Kurt Masur conducting Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks on 9th October.
