WIENER STAATSOPER PREMIERES:

DON CARLO / Giuseppe Verdi / 26 September 2024

For me, Don Carlo tells more than any other opera about power as an antithesis to freedom and about all that this power causes: oppression, violence, imprisonment, murder.’ So says director Kirill Serebrennikov, who will direct Giuseppe Verdi’s unique work as the first premiere of the season. Exemplary is the cast under the musical direction of Philippe Jordan, promising something spectacular both musically and scenically!

FIN DE PARTIE / György Kurtág / 16 October 2024

A logical sensation – that’s how one must describe Fin de Partie. György Kurtág was 92 years old when he premiered his first opera based on Samuel Beckett’s work. Director Herbert Fritsch’s production emphasizes a ‘joyful transience,’ aligning with conductor Simone Young’s interpretation of Kurtág’s remarkable composition, which also incorporates a considerable amount of dark humor.

DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE / Wolfgang A. Mozart / 27 January 2025

Die Zauberflöte, premiered in 1791, is characterized by contrasts and diversity. A fairytale, world-spanning magical sphere combines a quest for knowledge and wisdom with simple joy, cheerfulness, and comedy. In the production by Barbora Horáková, and under the musical direction of Franz Welser-Möst, this internationally renowned work will now be presented anew at the Vienna State Opera!

NORMA / Vincenzo Bellini / 22 February 2025

Norma by Vincenzo Bellini is counted among the great masterpieces of the bel canto era. The tragic story is told through music that is as captivating as it is unique, with the central aria ‘Casta diva’ achieving almost iconic fame. After a long hiatus, Norma returns to the Vienna State Opera for its premiere, conducted by Michele Mariotti and directed by Cyril Teste, who celebrated a major success at the State Opera last year with his production of Salome.

IOLANTA / Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky / 24 March 2025

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s last opera, Iolanta, is a fascinating fairy tale full of breathtaking melodies, which primarily revolves around a blind princess and subtly explores themes of enlightenment and redemption. Director and State Opera debutant Evgeny Titov aims to bring a ‘ruthless view of the world’ to his production. Leading the musical direction of this new production is Tugan Sokhiev, who recently enthralled audiences on an Asian tour with, among others, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

WIENER STAATSBALLETT

For his final season as director and chief choreographer of the Vienna State Ballet (FULL DETAILS HERE), Martin Schläpfer has planned two premieres at the Vienna State Opera: Christopher Wheeldon‘s The Winter’s Tale, based on William Shakespeare’s tragicomedy of the same name, is an important Austrian premiere on the schedule, while Pathétique brings together two icons of New York dance modernity, George Balanchine and Merce Cunningham.

(In the repertoire at the Vienna State Opera, Rudolf Nureyev’s Swan Lake, Martin Schläpfer’s Sleeping Beauty, John Neumeier’s Lady of the Camellias and the Triple Bill Shifting Symmetries with works by Hans van Manen, William Forsythe, and George Balanchine return to the program. Additionally, exclusively for two performances in June 2025, Mahler, live featuring Hans van Manen’s live video ballet and Martin Schläpfer‘s first creation for the Vienna State Ballet 4, returns to the State Opera – the production with which Schläpfer opened his directorship in 2020 and is also available on DVD.

A guest performance by the Vienna State Ballet will take place in May 2025 in Spain, where at the Teatro Real Madrid, they will present Hans van Manen‘s Concertante and Martin Schläpfer‘s 4.)
