Season Preview – Zurich Opera 2022/23

Zurich’s new Ring cycle directed by Andreas Homoki and conducted by Gianandrea Noseda continues with Die Walküre with a cast including Christof Fischesser as Hunding, Tomasz Konieczny as Wotan and Camilla Nylund as Brünnhilde. Dates: September 18, 21, 29, October 2, 5, 8, 18. Siegfried has Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role. Performances on 5 March (2023), then 9 14 18 22 26 March.

There will be new productions of Offenbach’s Barkouf, Cavalli’s Eliogabalo, Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux (with Stephen Costello and Stéphane d’Oustrac).

Other new productions include Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, George Benjamin’s Lessons in Love and Violence, and Turandot with Piotr Beczala as Calaf, making his debut in that role, and Sondra Radvanovsky as Turandot (June 2023).

There will be concert performances of Delibes’s Lakmé (April 2023)

Bampton Classical Opera’s summer 2022 production will be Haydn’s Il mondo della luna. This three act dramma giocosa from 1777 is the best-known of several operatic settings during the second half of the century of a delightfully crazy libretto by Carlo Goldoni.  As Mozart was to do later with Così fan tutte, Haydn was inspired by a bizarre plot of disguise and deception to create a score of ravishing beauty and wit.  How better to persuade an over-protective but gullible father to allow the marriages of his daughters than to persuade him that he has been transported to the moon?
