Garsington Opera 2026 – 27 May- 25 July 2026
La traviata, Der Rosenkavalier, Il ritorno d’ulisse & The Importance Of Being Earnest
Garsington Opera is delighted to announce cast and creative teams for the 2026 Season. The festival opens with a new production of La traviata with award-winning director Louisa Muller and designer Christopher Oram. The Philharmonia is conducted by Garsington’s Artistic Director Douglas Boyd.
The Philharmonia orchestra performs under the baton of Finnegan Downie Dear for the eagerly-anticipated revival of Der Rosenkavalier. The premiere of Bruno Ravella’s production in 2021, with Gary McCann’s sumptuous set, was greeted with an ecstatic audience and critical reaction, with long waiting lists for tickets.
Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse continues the highly successful collaboration of director John Caird, designer Robert Jones, conductor Laurence Cummings and period instrument specialist orchestra The English Concert.
Completing our quartet of works this summer is a new production of Gerald Barry’s hilarious version of Oscar Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest. It was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel together with the Barbican. First seen in the UK in concert in 2012, it was an immediate hit and ‘that rare thing: a genuinely funny opera’ (The Observer). Douglas Boyd conducts the Philharmonia, Jack Furness (The Queen of Spades 2025) directs, and Francis O’Connor is the designer.
