Uruguay Verdi Powers Teatro Solís 2013 Season (JSJ)
With the 2013 opera season in full swing in Buenos Aires, across the water in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, the Teatro Solís is about to launch its recently announced season.
This being a Verdi “year”, this composer’s works have pride of place with the season opening with Macbeth in August (opening Aug. 16) and followed by Falstaff in September (opening Sept. 9).
Macbeth is a new production by Brazilian André Heller and Argentine conductor Carlos Vieu. The cast includes Darío Solari (Macbeth), Elizabeth Blancke Biggs (Lady Macbeth), Alexander Teliga (Banquo), Gastón Rivero (Macduff) and Gerardo Marandino (Malcolm).
Falstaff will be produced by Argentine Alejandro Chacón with Martín Lebel from France on the pódium. The cast includes Fernando Barabino (Falstaff), Federico Sanguinetti (Ford), Sandra Silvera (Alice), Laura Delogu (Nannetta), Mariella Nocetti (Meg Page), Raquel Pierotti (Mrs Quickly) and Dario Schmunck (Fenton).
Next up is a Gala recital by Uruguayan tenor Edgardo Rocha, accompanied by the Montevideo Philharmonic under Martin Lebel on November 13. Rocha, whose engagements in the current year include the Vienna Opera and Teatro Real in Madrid, will present extracts from operas by Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti and Puccini among others.
The season closes with Il Duce by Uruguayan composer Federico García Vigil, which tells the story of Benito Mussolini and life under his rule, opening December 17. Italian Massimo Pezzutti is director, Federico García Vigil is musical director, and the cast includes Homero Pérez Miranda (Il Duce), Paula Almerares (Claretta), Nidia Palacios (Edda), Gerardo Marandino (Primo Levi) and Mother (Raquel Pierotti).
