Playhouse delights in Oxford Opera’s pitch-perfect production of Puccini’s La bohème’
Oxford Mail, 2020

A nation-state suffering under the grip of a corrupt military junta. Passion, corruption, betrayal, justice and redemption all come together as Tosca and Cavaradossi fight for love and freedom under the shadow of the oppressor Scarpia.

The company’s production will star Marlene Devoe, Sam Furness, and Philip Rhodes.

Marlene Devoe makes her debut as the iconic diva, Floria Tosca. A New Zealand-born, Samoan soprano, she returns to Oxford Opera following her stellar performances as Mimì in La bohème (2020) and Pamina in The Magic Flute (2022).

Sam Furness also returns to the Oxford stage, playing Cavaradossi. He last delighted audiences with his exceptional performance as Rodolfo in La bohème (2020). Rhodes makes his debut with the company, in a role that is fast becoming one of his signatures. Direct from the Royal Opera House production of Fidelio, he will bring his astonishing charisma and stage presence to one of opera’s greatest bad boys, Scarpia.

Across both performances, Tosca will feature 60 young people from Oxford Opera’s Youth Company and students from over ten schools in Oxfordshire. The Oxford Opera Orchestra will be conducted by Director of Music John Warner. Together, they will bring Puccini’s masterpiece to life, in a production directed by Katie Blackwell. The new translation has been arranged by Christopher Cowell.

Tosca is considered one of the greatest operas ever written. With timeless themes of power, love, corruption and redemption, the piece resonates across the generations and is more pertinent today than ever.

Tickets for Oxford Opera Company’s Tosca at Oxford Playhouse start from £14 and are available from Box Office: 01865 305305 or to book online click here.
