The Met: Live in HD – January to June 2023
The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of high-definition cinema broadcasts, distributed in the UK by Trafalgar Releasing, offers a unique opportunity to visit New York from the comfort of your local cinema in 2023. From January – June 2023, seven incredible performances will be broadcast live from the Met stage in New York to cinemas worldwide. Audiences will also enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes access, including backstage interviews with artists and more.
The Live in HD series brings dazzling productions from one of the most spectacular opera houses in the world in local UK cinemas. A highlight of the season is Grammy Award-winning composer Terence Blanchard’s first opera, Champion, based on the true story of world-champion boxer Emile Griffith. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green is the young Griffith, who rises from obscurity to become one of the world’s greatest boxers, and bass-baritone Eric Owens portrays Griffith’s older self, haunted by the ghosts of his past and that fateful 1962 fight against Benny Paret.
Giordano’s Fedora, with soprano Sonya Yoncheva in the title role, recently was the first Live in HD broadcast of 2023 (review here). This performance marked the award-winning initiative’s 150th live transmission. This is followed in March by Wagner’s Lohengrin, starring tenor Piotr Beczała (Loris in Fedora),
Other brilliant Met Opera productions presented during the Live in HD season include Simon McBurney’s production of Die Zauberflöte conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann, which will raise the orchestra pit to allow interaction with the cast, and Stutzmann will also conduct Ivo van Hove’s cinematic staging of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Audiences will also have the chance to see the return of two Robert Carsen productions, including Verdi’s Falstaff, with baritone Michael Volle singing the title role in his first Verdi opera at the Met, and Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, with soprano Lise Davidsen and mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as the Marschallin and Octavian.
Dates for your diaries: Wagner’s Lohengrin (18th March), Verdi’s Falstaff (1st April), Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier (15th April), Terence Blanchard’s Champion (29th April), Mozart’s Don Giovanni (20th May) and Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (3rd June).
