Sopranos Zoë Soleil Vallée and Eyra Norman share the demanding central role of Amina. Norman was recently awarded the Song Prize at the Kathleen Ferrier Awards at the Wigmore Hall. Vallée, a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, returns to opera following appearances in several roles in The Phantom of the Opera, including Carlotta, in the West End.
They are joined by Bethan Terry and Hailey West as Lisa; Sarah Winn and Mathilda Goike as Teresa; Robin Jeffcoat Dick and Tobias Campos Santinaque as Elvino; Matias Carbonetti Schwanek and Michael Roche as Count Rodolfo; and Oleksii Zasiadko and Ted Day as Alessio. Naveen Kanamarlapudi appears as the Notary.

The production is directed by John Wilkie, whose recent L’elisir d’amore at Waterperry Opera Festival was praised as ‘refreshing and engaging’ (The Stage) and ‘a total delight’ (London Theatre 1). Colombian-born Stefano Boccacci conducts, with James Gillett taking over on 11 and 12 November. The singers are coached by bel canto specialist David Parry.
HGO General Director Philip Sheffield says: ‘La sonnambula offers everything that makes Bellini so irresistible: glorious melodies, vocal fireworks, tenderness and humour — and nobody dies! As usual with HGO, we have the most amazing casts. These are two casts of equal distinction, and audiences can expect a genuinely exciting performance whichever date they attend.’
Bellini’s opera tells the story of Amina, a young woman whose happiness is threatened when she is discovered asleep in a stranger’s room. The revelation that she is a sleepwalker ultimately restores both her reputation and her relationship with Elvino. Combining emotional delicacy with some of the most exhilarating music in the bel canto repertoire, La sonnambula remains one of Bellini’s best-loved works.
