Der fliegende Holländer / La clemenza di Tito /
Serse / Falstaff / Exodus
The Garsington Opera season opens on Wednesday 26 May 2027 with Garsington’s first Wagner opera in the company’s 38-year history: the composer’s early mature masterpiece Der fliegende Holländer, in a co-production with Irish National Opera directed by Rachael Hewer and designed by Francis O’Connor. Douglas Boyd, Garsington Opera’s Artistic Director, conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Mozart’s penultimate opera La clemenza di Tito features The English Concert conducted by Clemens Schuldt – reprising their highly successful partnership from Mitridate, re di Ponto (Garsington Opera, 2023). Award-winning director PJ Harris and designer Alex Eales bring this drama of Roman political intrigue to the stage.
Handel’s tragi-comedy Serse was written towards the end of the composer’s operatic journey. Unappreciated at its premiere, it was finally recognised as a masterpiece in the 20th century, admired for its witty libretto and many wonderful arias. Making their house debuts are director Erica Whyman and Handel specialist David Bates who conducts The English Concert. The production is designed by Tom Piper.
Garsington presents a long-awaited revival of Bruno Ravella’s production of Verdi’s Falstaff, designed by Giles Cadle. It received five-star reviews at its premiere in 2018: ‘Ravella’s direction … scintillatingly mirrors the quicksilver intricacy of the score’ (The Independent). Conductor Alexander Joel makes his Garsington debut with the Philharmonia.
The season closes with the world premiere of a new community opera. Exodus is based on the eponymous novel by Julie Bertagna – a classic of the Young Adult genre. It has been newly created as an opera by composer John Barber and librettist Jude Christian. This ambitious new production will unite professional soloists and musicians with 200 performers from our Youth, Adult and Infant companies on the stage of the Opera Pavilion at Wormsley, conducted by Douglas Boyd and directed by Karen Gillingham, Garsington’s Creative Director of Learning & Participation.
