Strange and Ancient Instruments Celebrate  Sound House Developments

Strange and Ancient Instruments Celebrate  Sound House Developments

The premiere of the Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments ‘Sound House’ on Friday 30 October at the National Centre for Early Music (NCEM), York is the perfect showcase to illustrate the impact of a £185K Capital Project on one of York’s most versatile and unique buildings.

‘Sound House’ includes a 30-minute visual and aural documentation of the development of the project for audiences to explore on foot leading straight into the performance which utilises the NCEM’s new audio visual and lighting systems plus stage. The piece seamlessly fuses 17th century works with new compositions by the composer Jon Nicholls which creates an astonishing sonic world in response to the 17th century philosopher, statesman and scientist Francis Bacon’s writing    Sylva sylvarum (or A Natural History, in Ten Centuries) on sound and hearing. ‘Sound House’ features some extraordinary instruments, including the beautiful Lirone, a multi-stringed bowed viol, and the little-known viola bastarda.

Delma Tomlin MBE, Director of the NCEM said: “Thanks to support from Arts Council England, The Foyle Foundation, the Feoffees of St Michael’s Spurriergate and the Noel Terry Charitable Trust, we have been able to upgrade our staging, IT, lighting and audio-visual equipment and to significantly restore St Margaret’s historic Romanesque porch. These developments are designed to improve the NCEM’s long term sustainability and bring the building bang up to date since its opening 15 years ago.”

The Society of Strange and Ancient Instrument’s Clare Salaman has devised and directed ‘Sound House’. The musicians are Jon Banks: santouri, gothic harp, percussion; Liam Byrne: lirone, treble viol; Jean Kelly: gothic bray harp, triple harp; Alison McGillivray: violone, viola bastarda and Jo Willis: Electronics.

The evening will conclude with a reception hosted by Mike Taylor, Chair of the charity that administers the NCEM and attended by Nina Baptiste of Arts Council England, Yorkshire and Steve Stewart, acting Chief Executive, City of York Council, followed by drinks and canapes for all the audience.

Tickets – Adults £13.00 (Concessions £11.00; Students £5.00) – are available from the NCEM box office tel: 01904 658338 and online at www.ncem.co.uk
