Opera reinvented, rewired, and reborn
Arcola Theatre announces the full programme for the 2026 Grimeborn Opera Festival, marking the festival’s 19th year of boundary-pushing opera. Shaped by environmental urgency, political intrigue and women’s perspectives, this season presents operas that are as captivating, provocative and alive as the modern world they respond to.
Presenting 13 operas, premiering 6 new works and 7 classics reinterpreted, the festival will run from Wednesday 15 July – Saturday 5 September 2026.

Grimeborn 2026 embraces opera as a living, evolving art form – where daring stories, urgent questions, and bold reinventions intertwine across intimate and dynamic stages. This season pulses with immediacy as original new works such as Lisa Logan’s After My Breath and William Gardner’s Eden 2.0 explore sustainability and collective responsibility, while Tuluğ Tırpan’s Lowest of the Low (Ganz Unten) – a bold operatic adaptation of Günter Wallraff’s best-selling book of the same name, directed by Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen – illuminates life at society’s margins.
Voices both female and visionary further shape the programme, from the dreamlike circularity of Ned Rorem’s Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters to the comic chaos of Madeleine Dring’s Cupboard Love. Furthermore, psychological intensity runs through Kevin Rodgers’s The Murderous Delusions of Gavrilo K and Schoenberg’s Erwartung, immersing audiences in fractured memories and turbulent inner worlds.
To complement the contemporary works, the classics are reimagined with fresh vitality. Handel’s Rinaldo and Giulio Cesare in Egitto crackle with political intrigue and enchantment, while Mozart’s Così fan tutte and The Magic Flute are recast for modern eyes.
Innovating the form, Bitter Visions: By Order of Hildegard – inspired by Hildegard von Bingen’s 12th-century morality play Ordo Virtutum – invites audiences to examine notions of female desire and virtue through the story of a soul seduced by the devil and Ensemble OrQuesta’s Dido and Aeneas reimagines Henry Purcell’s enduring operatic masterpiece as an intimate experience shaped by audience autonomy.
Opera must speak to the world we are living in, and the Grimeborn 2026 season does exactly that.
